Carter sighed and got into his car, slamming the door a little too hard when he found his seat. He put his keys in the ignition and waited for Mackenzie to get her seatbelt on to start driving. Their playlist played mockingly in the background, and it took a lot for him not to shut it off. His mouth was dry and his hands were clammy, he couldn’t even begin to imagine how Mackenzie felt.
Carter started the car and headed to the courthouse. He was so distracted that he didn’t even notice that he was speeding. When they made it to the building, he found a parking spot and sat in the car in silence for a moment.
”So, this could be the last moment we ever have of a normal life,” he told her. He glanced up at Mackenzie and smiled softly.
”You’re going to do great, baby. We’re going to get out of this,” he assured her, opening the door and stepping out of the car. He rubbed his face, then waited for Mackenzie to head up the courthouse stairs.
